Continue readingSponsored annually by Historic Beaufort Foundation, the 2021 Spring Architect’s Tour set for Saturday, March 20th, showcases the creative and distinctive imprint of some of Beaufort’s most accomplished architects.
Beaufort has boasted some of the best of southern architecture since building began here in the 18th century and today’s local architects continue the tradition. This year, the tour features the work of Allison Ramsey Architects, Frederick and Frederick Architects and Montgomery Architecture & Planning.
The annual tour provides a sample of both traditional and contemporary architecture that interprets the Lowcountry in the 21st century. Properties included this year are located in historic downtown Beaufort, Lady’s Island, Cane Island, Land’s End and Fripp Island.
This year’s event will feature both “hard-hat” tours of houses under construction and tours of recently completed houses. HBF is mindful of the continuing Covid-19 concerns and will ensure that protocols are in place for signage, social distancing, access, masking, sanitizer and other necessary precautions.
Advance Reservations are recommended and available by calling HBF at 843-379-3331 or going online to Historicbeaufort.org. Tickets are $65 per person. The tour is self-paced and self-driven.

The Annual Meeting of the Historic Beaufort Foundation will be held on Thursday, April 29th at 12:00 p.m. An update on HBF programs and activities will be given and the election of Board and Officers will be held. THE BEAUFORT STYLE
Just as Charleston and Savannah developed unique individual styles of residential architecture in the early years of the 18th century so did their smaller neighbor located between the two on Port Royal Island in the old Beaufort District. Beaufort, South Carolina’s second oldest town, founded in 1711 did not grow as fast the two larger more urban towns but was just as strategically settled on a bend in the Beaufort River.
The Beaufort Style reflects the rural setting of the new town laid out following the natural bends of the river as it wraps around Beaufort’s famous Point. Sometimes referred to by architectural historians as a “plantation style come to town.” Beaufort’s architectural heritage clearly reflects both topographic and climatic conditions with key design elements that ensured more comfort in the sub-tropical climate of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Historic Beaufort Foundation’s annual Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens offers the unique opportunity to visit inside private houses, gardens and country estates. Take the short journey south this October to experience the charm and character of our smaller 18th century town and explore the architecture and setting of our National Historic Landmark District.

During the Friday Walking Tour of the National Historic Landmark district, patrons are invited to explore Beaufort from a rare vantage point as gracious property owners open their private homes and gardens to public view. This year’s homes represent the best of The Beaufort Style and reflect Beaufort’s eclectic architectural history from a late 18th century riverside manor to a charming Victorian cottages. Master Gardeners will be on site to interpret garden locations.
Saturday Afternoon Country Retreat & Lowcountry Picnic

Visitors will have a truly southern experience at this country estate nestled along the banks of the Combahee River in Prince William Parish. Price includes a Lowcountry picnic. A 30-minute drive from downtown Beaufort.

Enjoy a truly unique morning tour and light southern brunch as we celebrate The Beaufort Style at this exclusive event. Nestled in formal gardens, this rare house exhibits the influence of Adam and the emerging Federal Styles of architecture. As is typical of The Beaufort Style, the tabby house faces south, has a T-shape, a hipped roof, and a two story portico, resting on a raised foundation. Indepth interpretations will be provided by noted experts.
