Preservation Easements
In the 1970s, Historic Beaufort Foundation launched a program to protect and preserve historic properties.
The William Elliott, III House, (The Anchorage) ca. 1800 and the William Wigg Barnwell House ca, 1816, were the first two of Beaufort’s significant houses to be sold with covenants ensuring their long-term preservation.
Since then, HBF has worked with property owners of more than 30 historic properties.
More than 30 of Beaufort’s most notable buildings have been ensured long-term preservation through our easement program.
The donation of a preservation easement on a certified historic structure allows the owner to protect their property in perpetuity. In some cases, the gift of an easement to HBF is eligible for a federal income tax credit.
