Born in Albany, New York and raised in Slingerlands in Albany County, NY.

Griswold graduated from Albany Academy and attended Union College for one year.  Tutoring jobs afforded him the opportunity to spend time in the South. At the end of his employment as a tutor, he remained in the southeast to do research in Charleston, Beaufort, and Georgetown in South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia. His wife Anne Thomas Griswold (1902-1996) was from Augusta, Georgia.

Though he did most of his writing either in Augusta or in the mountains of North Carolina, his only two novels were set in South Carolina. His first book, Tides of Malvern, was set in Charleston, and his second, A Sea Island Lady, chronicled life in Beaufort from 1865 to 1930. The book is now out of print, but is available at McIntosh Books on Bay Street and at the Beaufort County Library.

Griswold never wrote another book, spending the remainder of his life (1940-2000) in Santa Barbara, California,
never returning to South Carolina.

The Francis and Anne Griswold Trust
